Panthers emerge in Brooks race
Penrith have emerged as a potential destination for Luke Brooks should the veteran half depart Manly ahead of the 2027 season.
ESPN understands the Panthers are interested in Brooks, per multiple sources, as uncertainty continues around the playmaker's future at the Sea Eagles.
Brooks remains contracted to Manly through 2027, meaning any move for next season would require an early release, with Jamal Fogarty and highly rated youngster Joey Walsh the focus of the Sea Eagles' halves plans.
The Penrith link comes amid uncertainty surrounding their halves stocks for 2027.
Nathan Cleary and Blaize Talagi face lengthy injury recoveries, while Jack Cole will depart for the Perth Bears at season's end, leaving Jack Cogger as the Panthers' other established halves option.
Raiders eye Storm young gun
Canberra are keeping tabs on Melbourne Storm prop Josiah Pahulu ahead of the November 1 transfer window.
ESPN understands the Raiders are interested in the highly rated 22-year-old, who remains contracted to Melbourne through the end of 2027.
Pahulu joined the Storm from the Gold Coast midway through 2025 and has since continued his development in Melbourne's system.
Eligible to negotiate with rival clubs for 2028 from November 1, Pahulu has emerged as a player of interest for Canberra as clubs begin positioning themselves ahead of the market opening.
Amone commits to the Dragons
St George Illawarra have retained promising youngster Viliami Amone on a one-year deal for 2027 despite interest from several rival clubs, ESPN understands.
The younger brother of former Dragons playmaker Junior Amone was part of the club's Jersey Flegg side that claimed the 2026 minor premiership.
He played in the second row during the season and also earned four NSW Cup appearances as he progressed through the Dragons' pathways.
Tupou says Grand Final result won't decide his future
Daniel Tupou has put talks over his playing future on hold until after Sunday's Grand Final, but says the result will have no bearing on whether he continues next season.
Asked if winning a premiership might change his decision, the 35-year-old said:
"Not at all. I've just parked it for now in this finals series. Once this game's done, then I'll get back onto it."
Tupou said he still believes he has another year in him and confirmed family and friends have encouraged him to keep playing. For now, his focus is on a fourth Grand Final appearance with the Roosters.
Toia rejects top-three centre talk ahead of grand final
Robert Toia has played his way into conversations about the NRL's best centres, but the Roosters youngster believes a top-three ranking is premature.
"It's pretty good to hear, to be honest," Toia said of the praise.
"But I think that's exaggerated. I wouldn't say I'm a top-three centre.
"I feel like I've been playing somewhat good footy, but there's still a lot to show and still more to come."
Sunday's Grand Final offers a test against Bradman Best, whom Toia named among the most difficult centres to defend because of his size, speed and agility.
The pair have never met off the field, but Toia said he loves the matchup and is looking forward to measuring himself against the Newcastle star.
Familiar faces on the other side
Tupou said the Roosters are pleased to see former teammate Sandon Smith thriving at Newcastle, praising him as a player who delivered in big games during his time at the club. That goodwill will be set aside on Sunday.
Tupou is also preparing to face Dom Young, whose return to the Knights has set up a direct contest with his former Roosters teammate.
He said he did not know the details behind Young's exit and declined to speculate, but expects "a great battle" against the winger.
