Spurs' Tobias Harris to miss preseason with left calf strain

SAN ANTONIO -- The San Antonio Spurs announced before tipoff of their intrasquad scrimmage Sunday that free agent acquisition Tobias Harris sustained a strained left calf during training camp that leaves him questionable for the Oct. 20 season opener against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

A team spokesman said that Harris would sit out Sunday's scrimmage and be reevaluated after the preseason.

Harris, 34, signed a two-year, $31 million deal in July to join the Spurs, leaving a Detroit Pistons team that he helped lead to a franchise turnaround over the previous two seasons.

A productive veteran lauded for knocking down shots and floor spacing in the frontcourt, Harris was expected to begin the season in San Antonio's starting lineup.

Harris averaged 13.5 points and 5.6 rebounds in his second stint in Detroit, as the Pistons improved from one of the league's worst teams two seasons ago to winning 60 games last season and advancing in the playoffs for the first time since 2008.

Harris served as one of the few veterans on a Pistons team that ranked as one of the NBA's youngest. The veteran signed a two-year $52 million deal with Detroit in 2024 as a free agent, after spending six seasons with the Philadelphia 76ers.
