WASHINGTON -- Francisco Lindor hit his 300th home run in the second inning of the New York Mets' season-closing 6-4 loss to the Nationals on Sunday.
Lindor drove left-hander DJ Herz's 92.9 mph fastball 409 feet into the left-field seats for his 21st homer of the year and his first since hitting two on Sept. 12.
He became the third primary shortstop with 300 career home runs, joining Cal Ripken Jr. and Miguel Tejada.
Lindor said hitting his 300th was on his mind entering Sunday's finale.
"For sure, for sure," he told reporters, according to MLB.com. "I wasn't trying the past couple of days. I was just trying to have good at-bats. And then today I said, 'You know what? I'm gonna try to hit a home run.' It doesn't work out like that all the time, but today it did. Somehow, some way it worked out, so it's not something I'm gonna take into next year. Enjoy today and try to find a way to get better, because I have to get better."
The five-time All-Star, who spent his first six seasons with Cleveland, has 162 home runs since the Mets acquired him before the 2021 season.
Lindor is the 172nd player to hit 300 home runs and the seventh to reach the milestone this season after Baltimore's Pete Alonso, Los Angeles Dodgers teammates Mookie Betts and Shohei Ohtani, Atlanta's Matt Olson, Pittsburgh's Marcell Ozuna and Toronto's George Springer.
