Fantasy football matchup rankings: Upgrade D'Andre Swift, fade James Cook III

Mike Clay: Jacoby Brissett is a ‘great streamer’ in Week 5 (1:20)

Making tough lineup decisions each week can be the most challenging part of fantasy football. When you're torn between two similar players, start the player with the superior matchup.

But exactly how does one determine the best (and worst) weekly matchups?

The matchup rankings provide a schedule-independent method to evaluate positional matchups, ranking all 32 opposing defenses in order of most to least favorable for opposing players at all four skill positions. Instead of relying upon seasonal totals, we calibrate points-allowed data to show how each defense fared relative to the difficulty of the schedule it has faced.

For Week 5, 2026 full-season data is used, and once five weeks are in the books, only the most recent five weeks' numbers will be used.

"Adj. FPA," or Adjusted Fantasy Points Allowed, reflects how far above or below players' weekly PPR fantasy point averages that defense held opponents at that position. A positive number means that the matchup is favorable; a negative number means it is unfavorable.

Finally, a caveat: Matchups are only one ingredient in my rankings formula. Not every favorable matchup should be exploited, nor unfavorable matchup avoided. If you want the most complete source for whom to start, consult our weekly rankings.

Quarterbacks

Matchups highlight: Jared Goff, Detroit Lions (at Arizona Cardinals). Lions games have been extremely conducive to big passing numbers. They've been involved in four of the nine games with the highest over/unders, with all of them going over, and they've run the fourth-most passing plays while allowing the second most. This is another of those lofty over/under games (54.5), and it involves a Cardinals defense that surrendered a combined 67.28 fantasy points on passing plays to Drew Lock, Brock Purdy and Jameis Winston the past three weeks. This might well be one of those games where scads of passing yardage piles up in the closing minutes.

Others to like:

Jacoby Brissett, Cardinals (versus Lions)
Matthew Stafford, Los Angeles Rams (versus Buffalo Bills, Monday Night Football)

Matchup to avoid: Brock Purdy, San Francisco 49ers (at Seattle Seahawks). The Seahawks, outside of their seemingly inexplicable 33-31 loss at home to Marcus Mariota and the Washington Commanders, have been a headache matchup for opposing quarterbacks. They held each of Drake Maye, Brissett and Justin Herbert under 10 fantasy points while creating seven total turnovers against them. Purdy himself struggled against the Seahawks in their two meetings last season, scoring 21.96 total fantasy points while committing three turnovers.

Running backs

Matchups highlight: D'Andre Swift, Chicago Bears (at Green Bay Packers). Kyle Monangai's Week 4 outburst casts the Bears' division of carries into question, but with Monangai exiting that game with a thumb injury, it might serve the team best to shift more of the work back to Swift, even if only for the week. A soft matchup against the Packers seems like a smart place to do it. The Packers have surrendered the third-most fantasy points (29.0 per game), points per rushing attempt (0.80) and points per target (2.12) to running backs, and much of that was accrued before the team lost LB Edgerrin Cooper to a season-ending Achilles' tear in Week 4.

Others to like:

Quinshon Judkins, Cleveland Browns (at New York Jets)
Emanuel Wilson, Seahawks (versus 49ers)
David Montgomery, Houston Texans (at Tennessee Titans)

Matchup to avoid: James Cook III, Bills (at Rams). It's rare that he'll land on this side, and in no way does his place here say, "Sit James Cook III, he's so much worse than Emanuel Wilson!" Cook is one of the more heavily involved running backs -- 11th in snap (68%) and 10th in rushing shares (64%) -- but it's the matchup, and how it further complicates his quest for touchdowns, that detracts. The Bills have run the football nine times inside the opponent's 3-yard line, and Josh Allen has six of them, converting all six for scores. The Rams, meanwhile, have yet to allow a touchdown or a 15-fantasy-point game, to a running back this season.

Wide receivers

Daniel Dopp: Michael Wilson is a fantasy football must-start in Week 5

Matchups highlight: Michael Wilson, Cardinals (versus Lions). Lions opponents are no worse for wear in terms of passing offense than they are, as the team has surrendered the second-most fantasy points per game (44.0), Adjusted Fantasy Points Added (+7.8) and fantasy points per target (2.12) to wide receivers thus far. Opposing WR1s have been especially dominant against the Lions, as Chris Olave, Garrett Wilson and Tetairoa McMillan averaged 14 targets and 33.4 fantasy points in their meetings. True Cardinals "WR1" Trey McBride also matches up brilliantly for this game, but Wilson's usage says he should be no slouch. Wilson is sixth in the league in target share (29%) and fifth in red-zone targets (8).

Others to like:

Carnell Tate, Titans (versus Texans)
Jameson Williams, Lions (at Cardinals)
Dontayvion Wicks, Philadelphia Eagles (at Jacksonville Jaguars, in London, Sunday 9:30 a.m. ET)

Matchup to avoid: Christian Watson, Packers (versus Bears). The No. 5 wide receiver in fantasy scoring, not to mention No. 6 in yards after the catch per reception (6.5) and No. 4 in red-zone targets (7), Watson is sure scripting a brilliant breakthrough story. But he might find success tougher to come by against the Bears, a defense that has been exceptional against wide receivers over the past three weeks. In that time, Justin Jefferson, DeVonta Smith and Wilson have averaged 22.3 routes, six targets and 8.9 fantasy points.

Tight ends

Is Isaiah Likely a top-10 TE option in Week 5?

Matchups highlight: Isaiah Likely, New York Giants (at Commanders). The Commanders have struggled mightily against the pass this season, just as they did in 2025 (29th, with +3.5 Adjusted FPA against tight ends). They're especially weak against tight ends, who have averaged a league-high 2.93 fantasy points per target against them. Dallas Goedert, Jake Ferguson, AJ Barner and Tyler Warren averaged just 5.8 targets, yet averaged a whopping 16.3 fantasy points against this defense in their meetings. Likely is a top-five tight end for Week 5 facing this matchup.

Matchup to avoid: Dalton Kincaid, Bills (at Rams). Before we declare the Kincaid magic done, bear in mind the matchups. He has faced the Nos. 1 (LAC) and 3 (NE) schedule-adjusted defenses against tight ends the past two weeks, which helps explain his totals of five targets and 5.5 fantasy points in those games. Kincaid next faces the Rams, fourth toughest on the matchups list, and a defense that has afforded the position the fewest fantasy points per target (0.91).
