Ohio State star wide receiver Jeremiah Smith broke the Buckeyes' career receiving yardage record during Saturday's 59-3 victory against Kent State.
Smith surpassed Michael Jenkins' mark of 2,898 yards with a 23-yard grab on Ohio State's second drive to set the record. He finished the game with five catches for 85 yards and now has 2,958 receiving yards in his three seasons.
Buckeyes coach Ryan Day said Smith ranks among the top receivers in Ohio State history.
"It's hard to put anybody above him," Day said. "He's a great example for everybody. ... The way he works every day. Loves to compete, loves the big moments. As fans, I think they do, but I hope they all recognize not only what you see on the field, but who he is a person, how much he loves Ohio State and this program."
Smith, who was awarded the game ball by his team afterward, said it was a meaningful moment.
"It means a lot," Smith said. "Put a lot of hard work into it. But I got two more to get (receptions and touchdowns)."
Smith is closing in on two other coveted career marks for the Buckeyes. He needs six touchdowns to break Chris Olave's school record (35) for scoring receptions and 22 catches to surpass Emeka Egbuka's school record of 205 total receptions.
Jenkins had held the reception yardage record after playing for the Buckeyes from 2000-03.
The junior, who is projected by ESPN as a top-five pick in next year's NFL draft, had 1,315 receiving yards as a true freshman two years ago and 1,243 yards last season. He had 315 yards and three touchdowns through Ohio State's first two games.
