Hull, Hynek homer as Tar Heels rally past Rebels in MCWS opener
Owen Hull and Colin Hynek each homered to spark North Carolina's 6-2 comeback victory over Ole Miss on Friday in the opening round of the Men's College World Series at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, Nebraska.
The Tar Heels scored all six of their runs across the final three innings to erase a pair of deficits and advance in the winner's bracket.
North Carolina (51-12-1) trailed 2-1 entering the bottom of the seventh before mounting its go-ahead rally. A sacrifice fly from Jake Schaffner tied the score, and Gavin Gallaher followed with an RBI single to center that gave the Tar Heels a 3-2 lead. Hynek provided the insurance in the eighth inning with a three-run homer to left-center.
Hull tied the score at 1 in the sixth with a solo shot to left. Tyler Howe had a strong night at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a walk.
Starter Jason DeCaro tossed 6⅔ innings while allowing two runs on five hits with nine strikeouts and three walks. Caden Glauber threw 2⅓ scoreless innings of relief, scattering three hits and striking out two to close the game.
Ole Miss (41-22) struck first in the third inning on an RBI double by Dom Decker. After Hull's homer tied the score, the Rebels briefly retook the lead in the seventh when Judd Utermark singled home Decker to make it 2-1. Decker finished 2-for-5 with two doubles and an RBI, while Owen Paino also contributed two hits. Starter Taylor Rabe held North Carolina to one run on two hits over 5⅔ innings, striking out seven and walking four.
