Two-time NBA MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has become a shareholder in Atlético Madrid, the Spanish club announced on Thursday.
In a statement, Atlético, who are currently second in LaLiga, said their partnership with the Oklahoma City Thunder guard, 28, was "grounded in shared values: ambition, excellence and the belief that every result must be earned."
Atlético have been majority owned by the US-based fund Apollo Global Management since last year.
"I'm excited to officially join Atlético Madrid's ownership group," Gilgeous-Alexander said. "This is a club with a long-standing presence at the top of European football, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to be part of its future."
The club did not disclose the size of Gilgeous-Alexander's ownership stake.
The Canadian, who was pictured wearing an Atlético tracksuit earlier this year, was traded to the Thunder in 2019, after spending a season with the LA Clippers.
He won the 2025 NBA finals, being named MVP, and won his second MVP title a year later as the Thunder were eliminated in the Western Conference Finals.
Gilgeous-Alexander also played for Canada at the 2024 Olympics.
Atlético are one of Spain's most successful football clubs, most recently winning LaLiga in 2014 and 2021 under current coach Diego Simeone.
Gilgeous-Alexander joins a number of high-profile NBA players who have invested in football, including LeBron James and Kevin Durant.
