This game was full of interesting storylines. For one, new French boss Zidane coaching against the country that ended his international playing career in infamous circumstances, when the then-France captain saw red for a headbutt in the 2006 World Cup final.
New Italy boss Roberto Mancini had off-field storylines of his own to deal with this week after news came through that Manchester City were found guilty of almost all charges levied at them by the Premier League.
Mancini, of course, was the Man City boss during some of the period in which the Premier League accused the club of breaking its financial rules.
When asked about it recently, the now Italy manager said it was not an issue that concerned him.
In terms of on-pitch action, coming into this game France were top of Nations League Group A having seen off Türkiye and Belgium so far in this lengthy international window.
Kylian Mbappé was the difference in a 1-0 victory over Türkiye while Olise notched the winner when France beat Belgium by the same scoreline.
Italy, for their part, are in third place, level on points with Belgium. Mancini and co started this window of with a 2-0 defeat to the Belgians but responded with a hefty 4-1 win over Turkey.
