Clarke: It was the right time to step away from Scotland job (1:55)

Sébastien Pocognoli has been appointed as the new Scotland head coach, replacing Steve Clarke.

Pocognoli, 39, became Monaco head coach in October but was sacked at the end of last season after the club finished seventh in Ligue 1 and failed to qualify for the Champions League.

The Belgian has signed a two-year contract and succeeds Clarke, who stepped down in June after seven years in charge after Scotland failed to reach the knockout stages at their first World Cup in 28 years.

Pocognoli played most of his career in Belgium but spent two seasons in England playing for West Bromwich Albion as a left-back, and had a season-long loan at Brighton in the Championship.

He will be Scotland's second foreign manager after Berti Vogts who managed from 2002-2004.

It will be his third coaching job, having guided Union St.-Gilloise to the Belgian title before joining Monaco.

"When I first heard of the interest, I was immediately excited about the opportunity," Pocognoli said. "Scotland's supporters are famous for their passion -- most recently at the World Cup in the USA -- and I have experienced it myself as a player for Belgium when we played in 2013.

"Along with my coaching staff, I will do everything I can to give them a team to be proud of and build on the success that has been achieved already by my predecessor.

"Since negotiations began, I have been doing a lot of research, asking a lot of questions and looking at areas that we can build on. I am hugely excited by the prospect and look forward to working with the players to achieve even more success.

"We don't have long until the first camp, so the coming weeks will be spent preparing for the UEFA Nations League and putting those plans into action on the training pitch when we meet up next month."
