Aston Villa sign left back Matteo Ruggeri, goalkeeper Zion Suzuki

Aston Villa have completed the signings of left back Matteo Ruggeri from Atlético Madrid and goalkeeper Zion Suzuki from Parma.

Ruggeri joins following the departure of Lucas Digne to Paris Saint-Germain, who played a key role in the same position for Villa across four seasons.

The Italy international only joined Atlético last year on a five-year deal.

Ruggeri made 26 appearances for Atlético in LaLiga last season and 15 in the Champions League, where they reached the semifinal but lost to Arsenal.

Japan international Suzuki has joined from Italian Serie A club Parma amid question marks over the future of Villa's Emiliano Martínez.

The 23-year-old Suzuki, who was Japan's goalkeeper at the World Cup this summer and made a memorable save onto the post from Brazil star Vinícius Júnior's shot, moved in a deal worth up to €35 million ($40 million), The Athletic reported.

Martínez, Argentina's World Cup-winning goalie in 2022, has been first choice for Villa for six years but has been close to leaving for the past two offseasons. Juventus reportedly tried to sign him in recent weeks and Martínez wasn't involved in the UEFA Super Cup loss to Paris Saint-Germain last week.

Suzuki was born in New Jersey, grew up in Urawa, Japan, and moved to Belgium to play for Sint-Truiden in 2023 before joining Parma the following year.

Villa are seeking to strengthen their squad as they prepare for a Champions League campaign and following the departure of key players from the club, including Morgan Rogers, Youri Tielemans and Digne.

Ruggeri and Suzuki are the latest Villa recruits, joining Johan Manzambi, João Gomes and Alejandro Garnacho, who is on an initial loan from Chelsea.

Villa's first Premier League match is at Brighton on Sunday.
