Breel Embolo opened the scoring for Switzerland in the tenth minute, but the goal was all about the magic and directness of Johan Manzambi. The Swiss forward burst forward with a mazy run to rip down the left channel and enter the box, before running down the byline and sending in an inch-perfect cross for Embolo to turn in from close range.
Having led 1-0 going into the break, Switzerland were off the blocks rapidly, with Dan Ndoye finding the net in the 46th minute with a low drive from the edge of the box, after Rafik Belghali's clearance fell straight to him. The indefatigable Denis Zakaria played a major role in setting that goal up.
At the other end, Algeria's forwards could do very little to trouble the Swiss defence, and in fact it was the leaders who missed the next best chance of the match - Fabian Rieder contriving to miss an open goal from two yards out. It mattered not at the end, though, as the Swiss ended up winning 2-0, earning their first knockout victory at the World Cup since 1938.
