'Chucky' Lozano omitted from Mexico's provisional World Cup squad

Javier Aguirre has submitted his provisional Mexico squad for the World Cup, with Hirving 'Chucky' Lozano and Rodrigo Huescas missing out.

Lozano, 30, has featured at the last two World Cups, but a lack of playing time while at San Diego FC where (he also faced disciplinary problems), has seen the experienced forward omitted from the 55-man roster.

Huescas, 22, is in the final stages of his recovery from a torn ACL sustained in October while playing for his club Copenhagen FC.

Mexico captain Edson Álvarez, who underwent ankle surgery in February after getting hurt while playing on loan at Fenerbahce from West Ham, has made the squad.

Dynamo Moscow's Luis Chávez, Anderlecht's César Huerta and Julián Araujo of Celtic have also been included, making their returns from injuries.

Aguirre's list includes 12 players from the Liga MX who didn't participate in the playoffs.

He has also named several uncapped players, including Álex Padilla, goalkeeper of LaLiga outfit Athletic Club.

Red Bull New York winger Jorge Ruvalcaba, who earned his first cap for Mexico in November, is also on the list.

Veteran goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa, who will turn 41 during the World Cup and has appeared in the previous five editions, is expected to be called for a sixth.

Mexico's final 26-man squad for the World Cup is set to be announced on June 1.

Mexico, co-hosts of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with the United States and Canada, kick off the tournament against South Africa on June 11 in Mexico City.

They will also face the Czech Republic and South Korea in Group A.
