Latest Titans news:

Tuesday, Aug. 11

The Titans won't admit it, but Tuesday was a wake-up call, especially for the offense after a spicy joint practice with the 49ers. San Francisco's pass rush was consistently harassing Titans quarterback Cam Ward despite the absence of premier pass rusher Nick Bosa due to knee tendinitis.

One of the pressures led to Ward climbing the pocket and rushing a throw across the middle that was picked off by 49ers safety Ji'Ayir Brown. The passing game struggled overall with Ward completing mostly short passes. His longest pass was an 18-yard strike to Carnell Tate on an in-breaking route.

"If they're going to drop all the way back, we'll check it down, and they've got to come tackle Tyjae Spears and Tony Pollard in space," Ward said. "I don't have to throw the ball 20 yards. I can throw it five yards and let Tyjae and Tony do the rest."

Both Ward and Mitchell Trubisky made multiple deep passing attempts to Elic Ayomanor, but all four of the passes fell incomplete.

  • Starting with the first rep of team period, there were multiple skirmishes after plays. Tate took a big hit from Renardo Green along the sideline causing some extracurricular activity. Then Austin Deculus got kicked out minutes into the team period for throwing a punch at a 49ers defensive lineman. Dan Moore Jr. was kicked out after he swung on Osa Odighizuwa after a near sack of Ward.

  • The center and right guard competition took another turn with Fernando Carmona getting early reps again. He was flagged for a false start when Ward tried to use a hard count. Carmona got to protect Ward for back-to-back practices this week. Jackson Slater got reps at center instead of right guard, snapping the ball to Will Levis. Andre James played right guard instead of center. "There's a lot of moving parts," Saleh said after practice. "That right guard's got to get solidified."

  • Saleh said he plans to play everyone in the preseason opener against the 49ers on Thursday. He didn't want to commit to a snap number but said it will be a couple of series for the starters. Ward liked the idea and said he's looking forward to getting into a rhythm in an actual game.

Sunday, Aug. 9

Carnell Tate continues to impress in his first NFL training camp.

One of his standout traits is how effectively Tate is running the full route tree.

Tate was on the receiving end of three touchdown passes from Cam Ward. The rookie wideout caught a deep pass for a score on a go route with Alontae Taylor being the closest defender. Tate made an impressive catch over Cor'Dale Flott in the corner of the end zone on another play, and he caught a quick out-breaking route for his third score.

"Tate has an innate ability to attack the ball," Titans receivers coach Greg Lewis said after practice. "He can make contested catches. He has long speed and is really smooth. The guy can also uncover."

More observations:

  • -Joshua Williams was once again in the yellow "non-contact" jersey. Williams had the jersey on in the scrimmage on Friday as well. Titans coach Robert Saleh said Williams is dealing with a pectoral injury that cost him some time during minicamp. Williams was still working in team periods.

  • The center position is still a competition, but it seems like veteran Austin Schlottmann will win the job. Left guard Peter Skoronski said Schlottmann has helped accelerate the learning process for him because of the previous time with Titans offensive coordinator when they were with the Giants. Pat Coogan continues to get early reps but has struggled at times with off-target snaps to Mitchell Trubisky during team periods.

  • Right guard is another position battle to watch. Cordell Volson and Jackson Slater have been the primary competitors, with both getting opportunities to protect Ward during team periods. Rookie Fernando Carmona also got some early reps for the first time on Sunday.

Thursday, Aug. 6

The Titans returned to the field after not practicing Wednesday. The pace was noticeably slower to start, but it livened up during team period.

The offensive line continues to shuffle, especially along the interior, where Cordell Volson and Jackson Slater are the top contenders for right guard while Austin Schlottmann, Pat Coogan and Andre James are battling for the starting center spot.

All five players have gotten first-team reps in different tandems. Schlottmann has enjoyed going against Jeffery Simmons during team period because "he's one of the best, if not the best interior defenders in the league." Coach Robert Saleh said they're not close to deciding who will start at this point but expects to be closer to a decision leading into the third preseason game.

Other observations:

  • WR Elic Ayomanor continues to have a solid camp. He caught a deep pass from Cam Ward on a go route in red zone team period to even the score with Alontae Taylor who broke up a pass on the same route earlier in practice. Ward went to Ayomanor again, but the pass fell incomplete. Ayomanor collided with S Kevin Winston Jr. as they went up for the pass in what Saleh described as a "bang, bang" play. Ayomanor got up favoring his left shoulder after being down for a bit. He went inside for further evaluation.

  • Left tackle Dan Moore Jr. returned to practice after leaving team period and walking into the building on his own with a trainer Tuesday. Moore took part in team period and got into a small pushing match with linebacker Cody Barton after one of the plays.

  • JC Latham came out during team period towards the end of practice after taking three reps. Reserve tackle Austin Deculus came on in Latham's place and stayed in when the next group of linemen came in. Latham returned for the final team period and had a couple nice blocks on run plays.

  • The Titans will host a Blue/White scrimmage at Nissan Stadium on Friday night. "We'll play move the ball," Saleh said after practice. "We'll play special teams and it'll flow like a game where you'll see first offense against first defense. We have a full scoring system to make it competitive and as game-like as possible. We'll try to get to like 90 plays."

Tuesday, Aug. 4

The middle linebacker competition is heating up. James Williams Sr. has strung three consecutive standout days.

Williams said he's lost about 20 pounds this offseason. The converted safety looked like a defensive back on a jumping one-handed interception of a Mitchell Trubisky pass during team period. Williams got a pass breakup later in practice when Trubisky went to tight end Kylen Granson on an out-breaking route.

Titans defensive coordinator Gus Bradley spoke glowingly of Williams before practice.

"We like those guys that have played safety in their career and move them down the linebacker," Bradley said. "That pass coverage part of it, that safety background that he has, I think allows him to be a little bit more instinctive."

Williams worked alongside rookie linebacker Anthony Hill Jr. mostly. Hill added a couple of interceptions as well, both off Trubisky. One of the interceptions came because Trubisky hit his hand on an offensive lineman's helmet.

Other observations:

  • DT Jeffery Simmons and OL Austin Schlottmann with some extracurricular after a play. Simmons swung at JC Latham in the scrum before Tanzel Smart grabbed Simmons. Coach Robert Saleh didn't like it. Stopped practice and gathered the group for a cool-down talk. Simmons was forced to work on a side field with Brian Bell (strength coach) and wasn't allowed to return to practice.

  • QB Cam Ward connected with WR Carnell Tate on a beautiful pass for the play of the day. Tate ran a post and Ward launched a deep pass that traveled at least 50 yards in the air. Tate showed explosiveness as he pulled away from Alontae Taylor to run down the ball for the touchdown.

  • One-on-ones were a little different for WRs/DBs under Saleh. It's more like seven-on-sevens but only allowing man defense. Saleh said he uses this format to facilitate more authentic route running instead of the unreasonably long-developing routes. The offensive line versus defensive line setup was the same as normal.

  • Backup QB Will Levis and WR Bryce Oliver connected on two deep passes. Levis worked a play-action pass to Oliver on a deep crossing route. Oliver caught the pass in between the safety and cornerback Keydrain Calligan. Oliver made a jumping catch on a go route from Levis later in the day.

  • LT Dan Moore Jr. left practice during the second team period. Saleh acknowledged after practice that Moore was hurt, but he didn't have any specifics regarding the injury immediately after practice.

Monday, Aug. 3

The first day of pads had a really good pace and tempo. Both the offense and defense did a good job keeping each other off the ground for the most part.

The defense had big hits from cornerback Nazeeh Johnson and linebacker Sean Brown, and quarterback Cam Ward had two hiccups throwing across his body while rolling out -- resulting in interceptions.

Coach Robert Saleh said the throws across the body are non-negotiable, especially the shallow ones. Safety Amani Hooker came up with the first interception as a result of what Saleh said was a "poor decision" by Ward. Saleh called the second interception an elite play by defensive lineman Jermaine Johnson II.

Ward did have a couple of nice spot throws to Wan'Dale Robinson between defenders during team period. He also connected with veteran receiver Calvin Ridley on a well-placed pass to towards the sideline.

Other observations:

  • WR Elic Ayomanor continues to have a solid camp. He beat Micah Robinson at the line of scrimmage and caught a deep pass in the end zone from Mitchell Trubisky. The two almost connected on another deep pass but Robinson was called for pass interference. Ayomanor caught a pass on a deep in-breaking route from Ward also. Saleh credited Ayomanor for the offseason preparation and confidence he's playing with.

  • Defensive line coach Aaron Whitecotton didn't like the lack of intensity during individual period, so he made the group do pushups. The defensive line goes nonstop during that period. Whitecotton has them do a lot of work on the sled and with bags but at a very fast pace.

  • JC Latham took part in the first team period but worked with a trainer on the third field for the remaining ones. Latham's absence allowed Brandon Crenshaw-Dickson to get some valuable reps as he competes with Austin Deculus for the swing tackle spot.

Saturday, Aug.1

The Titans hosted fans at training camp for the first time this summer, and they got to see a pretty solid day from quarterback Cam Ward.

Ward and Elic Ayomanor connected on a couple of deep passes along the sideline. It's clear Ward trusts Ayomanor to win in jump ball situations, as the second-year tandem has found success on those 50-50 passes in the three practices open to the media.

Ward was sharp in team and 7-on-7 periods highlighted by a couple of three-completion streaks before giving way to Mitchell Trubisky.

Ayomanor has had a solid couple of days, making a living catching passes on deep in-breaking routes in addition to his big plays down the field. He is noticeably bigger and playing with more confidence this camp.

More observations:

  • Offensive tackle JC Latham returned to practice and took part in the first team period before sitting out the final two. Latham is working to improve his mental approach to the game. He hired a mental coach late last season and is working to better process the game and not let one bad play carryover to the next snap.

Thursday, July 30

The defense won the day, highlighted by two interceptions.

Cedric Gray picked off a pass from Cam Ward that bounced off Wan'Dale Robinson's hands along the sideline during the first team period. James Williams Sr. got the other turnover when he stepped in front of a Mitchell Trubisky pass intended for Xavier Restrepo. Jeffery Simmons and the defensive line forced multiple throwaways by Ward during both team periods, as well.

The offense did come up with a big play when Ward found Elic Ayomanor for a long touchdown. Ward was under pressure but side armed a pass down the field, and Ayomanor skied over Cor'Dale Flott to make the catch before outracing the safety to the end zone. Bryce Oliver also came up with a long play when he caught a pass of over 60 yards from Trubisky with Joshua Williams in coverage. Other than those two plays, it was mostly quick passes, and the defense was all over it.

More observations from the day:

  • Right tackle JC Latham came off the PUP list and worked on a third field with the team's training staff. Latham is noticeably bigger after reporting to camp with a slimmed down physique last year. Coach Robert Saleh said Latham is expected to be a full participant when the team practices again Saturday (Friday is a walk thru closed to media).

  • Calvin Ridley appears to be feeling better after dealing with a stomach bug that limited him in practice Wednesday. Ridley took part in team period and showed speed by running away from Flott on a deep pass, but it fell incomplete.

  • Jacob Martin continues to be a plus for the young defensive ends. Martin offered up plenty of tips to rookie Keldric Faulk before practice. The ninth-year veteran had pointers for Oluwafemi Oladejo after multiple reps as well. Veteran pass rusher Jermaine Johnson II also pointed to Martin as one of the guys that helped him as a rookie with Saleh and the Jets in 2022.

  • Trubisky returned after missing practice Monday because of tightness. Trubisky worked with the second group while Will Levis came in after him. His return relegated Hendon Hooker to an observatory role during team and 7-on-7 periods.

Wednesday, July 29

Robert Saleh listed third down, two-minute, and red zone as the three key principles of playing quarterback when asked before practice.

"When it comes to third down, everyone knows you're about to throw," Saleh said. "Or two-minute, you've got to have it. In the red zone where everything's sped up, and the windows get a lot tighter, that's where the quarterback shines."

Cam Ward agreed with the sentiment, saying third down is when you win or lose the game. This came after a so-so day for Ward, who targeted Wan'Dale Robinson frequently. Ward had a solid red zone team period, connecting with Elic Ayomanor and Carnell Tate for touchdowns. But he wanted more.

"We had some good plays, but our mindset is to score every chance we get," Ward said. "We for sure have to be better, and I have to be more on time on quicker routes in certain situations."

More observations from the day:

  • Before practice, Saleh said Austin Schlottmann and Cordell Volson would be with the first team at center and right guard. Jackson Slater opened up at right guard during the initial team period and got called for a false start on the second play. Volson worked at right guard with the next group alongside rookie center Pat Coogan.

  • Mitchell Trubisky didn't take part in practice due to soreness. That cleared the way for Hendon Hooker to get action in team period and 7-on-7 after not doing so during the open portion of OTAs and minicamp. Hooker had a nice pass to rookie tight end Jaren Kanak during 7-on-7.

  • Calvin Ridley is dealing with an illness that caused him to lose weight. Ridley was limited in practice Wednesday and didn't come out until after the 7-on-7 work. He didn't take part in the team period.

  • JC Latham came out and did some side work with a trainer toward the end of practice. Latham is dealing with a strained pectoral muscle that landed him on physically unable to perform list to start camp, but he is expected to be back soon.

Tuesday, July 28

The Titans opened training camp with news conferences by general manager Mike Borgonzi and new coach Robert Saleh.

Saleh spoke about how he'll handle calling the defense to get QB Cam Ward prepared for the season. Saleh plans to give Ward different looks but also said the defense will need to work on its scheme.

"Week to week will always be different, but we are still trying to strain the quarterback regardless of who it is," Saleh said. "We're going to structure the defense in a way that gets our guys used to playing defense for other opponents so they can get used to how we're doing things."

Saleh pointed to the joint practices with the San Francisco 49ers, Chicago Bears and Seattle Seahawks as other ways for Ward to see different defensive looks. He'll be in constant communication with OC Brian Daboll and QB coach Shea Tierney and will have individual meetings with Ward. Saleh's goal is to provide defensive insight and ask questions to get feedback from Ward.

More observations from the day:

  • Borgonzi said safety Amani Hooker will come off the physically unable to perform list Tuesday, and right tackle JC Latham will remain on PUP because of a strained pectoral muscle that kept him out of OTAs and minicamp. Borgonzi said Latham's status is day to day.

  • There will be an open competition for the backup quarterback slot according to Saleh. He said they'll give Will Levis every opportunity to compete with Mitchell Trubisky to be Ward's backup.

  • Saleh said he spoke to 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan a few days after Shanahan's car accident. "Very fortunate that he's still here," Saleh said. "Just talking to him and his wife, Mandy, what you see now is nowhere near what it was about two weeks ago. The surgeon did a great job."

  • Borgonzi said the team has had "positive conversations" with left guard Peter Skoronski's agents and is hopeful to get a long-term deal done.f
