The Philippines is sending its biggest Asian Games contingent in more than three decades, with more than 450 athletes set to compete across 38 sports as the 20th Asiad unfolds in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.
With several of the country's world-class athletes arriving in strong form, expectations are high for Team Philippines to improve on its medal haul from the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, where Filipino athletes won four gold medals, two silver and 12 bronze.

Jayuard Alciso and Toby Espejon both advanced to the men's shortboard semifinals after winning their respective quarterfinals. Espejon then lost to Japan in the semifinals, while Alciso fell to Indonesia -- sending both Filipinos to the bronze medal match against each other.
Alciso defeated Espejon in the all-Filipino bronze medal match to claim the men's shortboard bronze medal for the Philippines.

Weightlifting: Kristel Macrohon (Women's -69kg)
Kristel Macrohon narrowly missed the podium in the women's 69kg final, finishing fourth with a 227kg total from a 102kg snatch and 125kg clean and jerk. She finished 2kg behind Bahrain's Ingrid Grueso, who took bronze with 229kg.

Team Philippines placed 12th in the mixed team recurve qualification and 12th in the mixed team compound qualification.
In the men's individual compound qualification, Paul Marton dela Cruz placed 32nd, Jeremy Ebbinghans Reaport 36th and Alon Yuan Jucutan 41st, while Team Philippines finished 12th in the men's team compound qualification.
In the women's individual recurve qualification, Naina Dominique Tagle placed eighth, Gabrielle Monica Bidaure 28th and Giuliana Vernice Garcia 33rd. Team Philippines finished eighth in the women's team recurve qualification.

Reigning men's national marathon record-holder Sonny Wagdos withdrew from the men's marathon because of a high fever. According to PATAFA, Wagdos will focus on recovery ahead of the men's 5,000m on the final day of competition.
John Tolentino advanced to the men's 110m hurdles final after placing second in Heat 3 and third overall in the heats.
Naomi Johnson and Zion Rose Nelson failed to advance to the women's 200m final after finishing 12th and 14th, respectively, in the heats.
Neil Michael Catral failed to advance to the men's 200m final after placing 18th in the heats.

The Philippines concluded its men's baseball campaign with a 7-5 loss to Hong Kong China in the placement round.
Beach Volleyball
Khylem Progella and Sofiah Pagara completed a perfect 3-0 record in women's beach volleyball Pool G after defeating Hong Kong's Wing Man To and Wing Tung To 21-19, 21-17 in straight sets. The Philippine pair topped the pool and secured a place in the Round of 16.

Filipina Olympian Nesthy Petecio advanced to the next round of the women's 60kg boxing tournament after stopping Jordan's Mays Alreem Abukhadijah in the second round via referee stoppage.

Albert Ian Delos Santos lifted 324kg to claim bronze in the men's -70kg weightlifting final, giving the Philippines its 10th medal of the 20th Asian Games.

3x3 Basketball
Gilas Pilipinas Women's 3x3 won silver after losing to host Japan 21-11 in the gold medal match. The result gave the Philippines its first Asian Games medal in 3x3 basketball. Gilas Women had beaten Thailand 13-8 in the semifinals.
Gilas Pilipinas Men's 3x3 finished fourth after losing to Iran 21-10 in the bronze medal match. The Filipinos fell to South Korea 9-21 in the semifinals.
Artistic Gymnastics
Carlos Yulo reigned supreme in the men's individual vault final, posting 14.599 to claim his second gold medal of the 20th Asian Games. Yulo, 26, registered 14.733 in his first vault attempt and 14.599 in his second try. Miguel Besana also reached the vault final, finishing fifth with 13.783.
Karl Yulo won bronze in the horizontal bar, earning his first Asian Games medal in his first year of senior competition.
Carlos Yulo finished fourth in the parallel bars final with 14.300, narrowly missing the bronze medal by 0.133. China's Zou Jingyan won gold with 15.500, followed by Japan's Shinnosuke Oka with 14.500 and Uzbekistan's Rasuljon Abdurakhimov with 14.433.

Michael Del Prado and Gabriel Borado failed to advance from the men's 400m heats after placing 21st and 22nd, respectively.

Nilbie Espejon Blancada topped Heat 1 of the women's shorboard, with15-year-old Juralyn Taripe Española second. The event marks the historic Asian Games debut of surfing.
Toby Espejon placed third with Jayuard Alciso eighth in their respective the men's shortboard Round 1 heats.
Swimming
Gian Christopher Santos placed 12th in the men's 400m freestyle and did not advance to the final. Heather White finished 15t in the women's 50m butterfly and did not advance to the final.

Carlos Yulo claimed the Philippines' first gold medal of the 20th Asian Games, winning the men's floor exercise with a score of 14.666 at Nagoya City General Gymnasium. Yulo topped Kazakhstan's Milad Karimi and Japan's Shoma Tsukiyama, while his younger brother, Karl Eldrew, placed seventh with 12.223 in his Asian Games debut. The victory gives the Philippines six medals (1 gold, 1 silver, 4 bronze). Yulo will seek more gold in the vault and parallel bars finals on Sept. 25.
5x5 Women's Basketball: Gilas Pilipinas Women vs. Chinese Taipei (quarterfinals)
Gilas Pilipinas Women's campaign ended in the quarterfinals after an 83-71 loss to Chinese Taipei. Philippines made a strong start but trailed 42-34 at halftime before Chinese Taipei extended its lead in the second half. Afril Bernardino led the Philippines with 23 points, while Stef Berberabe and Janine Pontejos added 12 each. Kent Pastrana finished with 11 points.

Kayla Sanchez narrowly missed the podium in the women's 50m freestyle final, finishing fourth in 24.75 seconds. Sanchez advanced to the final after clocking 24.97 seconds for fifth in the heats. Heather White finished 12th in 25.90 seconds and did not advance.
Gian Santos finished 14th overall in the men's 200m breaststroke and missed out on the podium. He will compete in the men's 400m freestyle heats on Sept. 25. Logan Noguchi finished 23rd overall in the men's 50m butterfly, ending his campaign in the event.
The Philippines did not participate in the women's 4x200m freestyle relay heats.
Weightlifting: Eleaphraime Limmong (men's -60kg)
Eleaphraime Limmong's campaign ended with a DNF after failing to complete any of his three snatch attempts. He was unable to continue to the remaining portions of the competition.

3x3 Basketball: Philippines vs. Kazakhstan (Men's preliminary Pool A); Philippines vs. Malaysia (Women's preliminary Pool C)
Gilas Pilipinas 3x3 Men completed a perfect Group A campaign after beating Kazakhstan 21-15 to book a spot in the quarterfinals. Nic Cabanero led the way with seven points and three rebounds, while Andrei Dungo chipped in six points, three rebounds and two assists.
Gilas 3x3 Women also advanced to the knockout stage after turning back Malaysia 17-12 to finish atop Group C. Kaycee Dela Rosa powered the Filipinas with eight points and seven rebounds, with Victoria Pasilang contributing seven points.
Artistic Gymnastics: Team Philippines (men's team final); Team Philippines (women's team final)
The Philippines came away with sixth-place finishes in both men's and women's team finals. The men's squad amassed 227.359 points to finish ahead of Vietnam and Singapore, while the women's team registered a total of 147.763 points.
The chase for the first Asian Games gold medal continues on Sept. 24, as Carlos Yulo will compete in the individual apparatus finals in floor exercise, vault and parallel bars. Karl Eldrew Yulo will join his brother in the floor exercise final and will be the lone Filipino competing in the high bar final, while Miguel Besana will also see action in the vault final. None of the Filipinas advanced to the individual apparatus final.
Aquatic Swimming
Gian Santos broke the Philippine national record in the men's 200m freestyle heats with a 1:49.34 to reach the final, where he settled for 10th place in 1:49.80.
Xiandi Chua placed ninth in the women's 400m individual medley final after posting 4:53.19.
The mixed 4x100m medley relay team of Santos, Heather White, Teia Salvino and Logan Noguchi ranked seventh in the final with a time of 3:56.26. Salvino clocked 1:00.79 for 12th overall in the women's 100m butterfly, while Noguchi posted 54.57 for 16th in the men's 100m butterfly.
Kayla Sanchez and Salvino both recorded DNS results in the women's 100m backstroke. Sanchez was rested by the coaching staff to preserve her energy for the women's 50m backstroke on Sept. 24.
Baseball: Philippines vs. Japan (Men's preliminary Group A)
The Philippines succumbed to host Japan 7-0, failing to qualify for the Super Round and falling out of medal contention.
Beach Volleyball
The Philippine pair of James Buytrago and Ronniel Rosales fell 2-0 to Vietnam in their second preliminary-round match in Group C. They will take on Indonesia on Sept. 27.
Meanwhile, Sofiah Pagara and Khy Progella advanced to the round of 16 after defeating Mongolia 2-0 in Group G's preliminary round. The duo will next face Hong Kong on Sept. 26.
Boxing
Junmilardo Ogayre advanced in the men's 60kg division after edging Mongolia's Gantumur Lundaa 3-2 in the preliminary round. Ogayre was given a standing eight count and briefly touched the canvas in the third round, but held on to win on the judges' scorecards. He returns to action on Sept. 25.

Team Sibol Pilipinas' Naraka: Bladepoint campaign came to an abrupt end after back-to-back losses to Chinese Taipei and Vietnam, despite closing out the preliminary round with a 2-1 victory over China.

In the men's individual sabre event, Eunice Daniel Villanueva failed to advance to the round of 16 after coming up short against Saudi Arabia's Adel Mukhlid Almutairi 15-9. Christian Concepcion also saw his Asian Games campaign end after losing to Iran's Mohammad Fotouhi Firozabad 15-7 in the round of 16.
In the women's individual foil event, Janna Catantan was eliminated in the round of 32 after falling 15-2 to Singapore's Maxine Jie Xin Wong. Her sister, Samantha Catantan, also bowed out of her Asian Games campaign after falling to South Korea's Park Ji-Hee 15-10.

Marie June Adriano missed out on the Women's kumite -50kg gold medal match after losing 5-4 to Hong Kong in the semifinals. She bounced back by defeating Chinese Taipei's Ya-chi Chung, 10-3, to claim the bronze medal. Adriano's bronze increased the Philippines' medal tally to five, with one silver and four bronze medals.

Men's Pair, Heats: The Philippine pair of Rynjie Penaredondo and Van Adrian Maxilom finished last in Heat 1 with a time of 7:06.69, missing out on the Final A medal race.
Men's Single Sculls, Heats: Cris Nievarez placed fourth in Heat 2 in 6:59.66 and failed to advance to the Final A medal race. He will compete in the Final B.

Sherwin Nuguit's Asian Games campaign ended in the quarterfinals of the men's singles event. After topping Group E in the preliminary round, Nuguit fell to India's Jay Meena 4-3 in the quarterfinals.
The Philippines finished the soft tennis competition with one bronze medal, earned by the women's team.
Squash
The Philippine pair of Yvonne Dalida and Jonathan Reyes booked a spot in the mixed doubles round of 16 with a 2-0 victory over China. Reymark Begonia also moved into the men's singles round of 32 after a 3-1 win over Thailand, but his campaign ended in the next round with a 3-0 loss to Malaysia. Van Dalida, meanwhile, was eliminated in the men's singles round of 32 after falling to Pakistan, 3-0.
Weightlifting
Rosegie Ramos lifted 93kg in the snatch and 110kg in the clean and jerk to set a new Philippine national record. She totaled 203kg to finish fourth in her first major competition in the weight class.

Mark Lester Ragay ranked fifth overall with a combined score of 19.370 after the daoshu and gunshu events.

Football: Philippines vs. Kuwait (Men)
Philippines ended a 68-year wait for an Asian Games win after the Under-23 side edged Kuwait in their final assignment at the 20th Asian Games. Santi Rublico broke the deadlock in the 19th minute, but Kuwait drew level in the 66th minute when midfielder Scott Woods inadvertently turned his clearance into his own goal. Andres Aldeguer, however, won it for Philippines with a late penalty after Jared Peña was fouled inside the box.
Mixed Martial Arts: Jean Claude Saclag vs. Tajikistan (Men's traditional 65kg, final)
Jean Claude Saclag fell short of the men's traditional mixed martial arts 65kg gold medal after losing to Tajikistan's Otabek Rajabov in the final. The Team Lakay member settled for a bridesmaid finish, giving the Philippines its first silver medal in Aichi-Nagoya.

Alas Pilipinas closed its Asian Games campaign with a straight-set victory over Hong Kong to finish ninth overall.

Gian Santos placed 10th in the men's 400m individual medley in 4:25.90, while Chua finished eighth in the women's 200m backstroke in 2:14.20.

The Philippines dropped an 15-8 decision to China in its second Group A game of the men's baseball preliminary round. The loss put the Philippines at 1-1 after a 12-0 victory over Palestine. It faces host Japan on Sept. 23 in a must-win game for a place in the Super Round.

No Filipino gymnast advanced to the finals in the individual apparatus events. Garcia placed 11th and Kvamme 12th in vault. Alwyn Batican missed out on the men's kumite -75kg bronze medal after losing 10-1 to Kazakhstan's Nurkanat Azhikanov. Batican reached the quarterfinals after Kuwait's Omar was disqualified, then beat Macau's Xu Jia Xing before losing to former champion Morteza Nemati of Iran.
The Philippine women's national kata team captured bronze after beating Thailand 4-1 in the battle for third. Rebecca Cyril Torres, Samantha Emmanuelle Veguillas and Ysabielle Arrogante delivered the country's third bronze medal of the Games.

Xander Alipio's men's sanda -65kg campaign ended in the quarterfinals after he lost to Vietnam. Gideon Fred Padua also fell in the men's sanda -60kg quarterfinals, losing to China's representative. The Philippines finished the Games without a wushu sanda medal after winning one silver and two bronze medals at the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games.

Artistic Gymnastics: Carlos Edriel Yulo, Karl Eldrew Yulo, Justin Ace de Leon, Juancho Miguel Besana, Zachary Nunez (men's qualification, individual all-around)
Carlos Edriel Yulo and Karl Eldrew Yulo qualified for the men's floor exercise final after placing first and fourth respectively in qualification. Juancho Miguel Besana and Carlos Edriel Yulo also secured spots in the men's vault final after finishing fourth and seventh respectively.
Carlos Edriel Yulo advanced to the men's parallel bars final after placing sixth, while Karl Eldrew Yulo booked a spot in the horizontal bar final after finishing ninth. Only two gymnasts per country can qualify for an apparatus final.
The Philippine men's team also advanced to the team final on Sept. 23 after placing sixth overall in qualification.

Jayson Valdez failed to advance to the Men's 10m Air Rifle Final after finishing 35th in qualification.

Noelle Zoleta-Mañalac and Samuel Nuguit swept Pakistan 5-0 in preliminary Group D. The tandem then lost 5-2 to South Korea but advanced to the knockout stage after finishing second in the group. Their run ended in the round of 16 with a 5-0 defeat to South Korea.

Soft Tennis: Philippine women's team vs. Japan (semifinals to final)
The Philippines secured its first medal of the 20th Asian Games through the Women's Soft Tennis Team, whose bronze also marked the country's first-ever podium finish in the sport since it became an Asian Games medal event in 1994. The medal was won by Bien Zoleta, Princess Catindig, Hilary Paas, Shyryn Salazar and Christy Sañosa. Before this breakthrough, the quarterfinals had been the Philippines' best finish in the sport, with Zoleta reaching the final eight in four consecutive Asian Games editions.

Logan Noguchi, meanwhile, missed the final after finishing 20th in the men's 100m freestyle heats.

Rebecca Torres and John Lachica opened the Philippine karate team's campaign at the 20th Asian Games. Torres reached the women's individual kata quarterfinals before losing 4-1 to Chinese Taipei's Chien Hui-hsuan. Lachica, meanwhile, saw his campaign end in the men's -60kg kumite round of 16 against Rayan Gurbanmyradov.

The Philippines made a historic first appearance in modern pentathlon at the Asian Games, with both Samuel German and Michael Ver Anton Comaling reaching the men's individual final. German finished 15th with 1,485 points, while Comaling placed 17th with 1,408 points.
Shooting: Amparo Acuña (women's individual 10m air rifle, qualification to final)
Amparo Acuña finished 42nd in the women's 10m air rifle individual event after recording a total score of 620.5. The Filipino elite rifle shooter still has another event ahead, with the women's 50m rifle 3 positions individual competition scheduled for Sept. 26.
Teqball: Prince Agustin vs. Myanmar (Men's singles, bronze medal match
Prince Agustin's campaign ended in the bronze medal match after he lost to Myanmar's Friday Saw. Despite the defeat, Agustin made history as the first Filipino to reach the quarterfinals of teqball at the Asian Games. The Laoag City native was also competing against an opponent 22 years his senior.
Triathlon: Inaki Lorbes, Fernando Casares (men's individual, final); Raven Alcoseba, Kim Mangrobang (women's individual, final)
The Philippines missed out on an individual medal in triathlon at the 20th Asian Games. Raven Alcoseba placed ninth in the Women's Individual event with a time of 1:00:07, while Kim Mangrobang finished 20th in 1:07:23. In the men's event, Fernando Casares placed 10th in 54:58, with Inaki Lorbes finishing 21st in 56:44. The Philippines will have another medal opportunity in the mixed relay on Sept. 21.
Beach Volleyball: Philippine women's team vs. Bangladesh (Preliminary Pool E)
Sisi Rondina and Bernadeth Pons opened their 20th Asian Games campaign with a dominant 2-0 (21-6, 21-6) victory over Bangladesh's Lucky and Sabina Khatun. The tandem will next face Kazakhstan on Sept. 25.

Wong scored 18.859 points overall after placing seventh in the morning Taijiquan routine and 11th in Taijijian. In the men's changquan final, Sandrex Gainsan finished 10th, while Mark Anthony Polo placed 18th.

Gilas Pilipinas Women impressed in their Asian Games opener as they dispatched Kazakhstan 86-58 at Aichi International Arena. Debuting naturalized player Elizabeth Means put on an efficient performance of 23 points on 9-of-17 shooting from the field, along with four rebounds and eight steals. Stef Berberabe added 11 points, eight assists and five steals.
Women's Volleyball: Philippines vs. Kazakhstan (preliminary round)
Alas Pilipinas Women lost to Kazakhstan 27-29, 26-24, 25-23, 25-19 to end any medal hopes the team held. The loss saw Alas drop to 0-2, the lowest-ranked team in Group B. Only the top two teams in each group advance to the quarterfinals, and China and Kazakhstan advance from Group B.
Women's Football: Hong Kong vs. Philippines (Group G)
The Philippine Women's National Football Team earned its first win of the 2026 Asian Games, defeating Hong Kong 2-0 in its second Group G match. Princess Honey Arbilon led the Philippines in the women's individual fencing seeding round of modern pentathlon, placing seventh with 22 victories and ten defeats.

Men's Football: Philippines vs. Uzbekistan (Group C)
Philippines' first appearance in the Asian Games men's football tournament -- since it became an age-group event -- saw them fall 5-1 to powerhouses Uzbekistan at Nagoya City Minato Soccer Field. Josh Meriño scored Philippines' lone goal in the 63rd minute, but the Filipinos endured a numerical deficit for much of the second half after Gavin Muens was sent off three minutes following the restart. Philippines will next face Vietnam on Friday at the same venue.

5x5 Men's Basketball: China vs. Philippines (Group C)
Gilas Pilipinas' campaign at the 20th Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya came to an end with a disappointing 105-61 defeat at Aichi International Arena, ending the Philippines' bid to defend its gold medal. The Filipinos needed to avoid a loss by more than 37 points to secure a quarterfinal berth. However, the 44-point setback left them with a minus-17 point differential, worse than Jordan's minus-5 and Saudi Arabia's minus-11. The result eliminated the Philippines from contention for one of the two best third-place spots across the three groups.
Women's Football: Philippines vs. Uzbekistan (Group G)
Natalie Collins' late equalizer rescued a point for the Filipinas, who opened their 20th Asian Games women's football campaign with a 1-1 draw at Gifu Nagaragawa Stadium. Mehribon Egamberdieva put Uzbekistan ahead in the 81st minute, but Collins came off the bench to level the score in the 89th minute.

The NLEX Road Warriors guard scored 13 of his 20 points in the second quarter, while Ahanmisi, San Miguel's newest acquisition, drilled five triples in the final period to finish with 22 points on 7-for-11 shooting from beyond the arc.

Gilas Pilipinas started its gold medal defense on a low note, stumbling against the Jakarr Sampson and Elijah Thomas-led Bahrain, 89-85, in Aichi International Arena. Former NBA player Sampson led Bahrain with 24 points and eight assists on 53% shooting from the field, while the bruising big Thomas also added 20 points. Calvin Oftana led the cause for the Philippines with 31 points on 6-for-9 shooting from beyond the arc.
