Mumbai Indians (MI) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) played out a 444-run game at Wankhede Stadium on Sunday night in IPL 2026. Here are the statistical highlights from the game.
221 - The target MI successfully chased down. It is MI's highest successful chase in the IPL, bettering the 219-run chase against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in 2021. MI's 221-run chase is also the highest by any team at the Wankhede in the IPL.
5107 - Days between MI winning their first match of an IPL season - against CSK in 2012, and against KKR in 2026. MI lost their first game in 13 successive seasons until they beat KKR on Sunday, including five times as defending champions.
Sunday was only the fifth time in 19 seasons that MI won their opening game. All the previous four wins came in successive seasons from 2009 to 2012.
23 - Balls that Rohit Sharma needed to complete his fifty against KKR, the fastest of his 50 fifty-plus scores in the IPL. His previous fastest was off 25 balls, against CSK in the 2015 final.
Rohit's 23-ball fifty is also his joint-quickest for MI - he had done the same against Perth Scorchers in CLT20 2013.
Sunday was also only the second time in 19 seasons that Rohit scored a fifty in his first match of the season. The other instance was also against KKR, when he scored an unbeaten 98 in 2015.
1161 - Runs that Rohit has scored against KKR in the IPL, the most by any batter against an opponent, going past Virat Kohli's 1159 runs against Punjab Kings (PBKS).
148 - Opening partnership between Ryan Rickelton and Rohit on Sunday. It is the second-highest opening stand for MI in the IPL, and the third-highest for any wicket. It is also MI's highest partnership at the Wankhede.
23 - Runs that Rohit scored off Varun Chakravarthy, the most he scored against any one bowler on Sunday. His 23 runs came from just 11 balls while being in control of all of those, and he struck four boundaries, including a six. Before Sunday, Rohit had scored only 48 off 49 balls he had faced from Varun in the IPL, while hitting only five fours and a six.
11.86 - Varun's economy rate across his last six T20s, where he has gone for 273 runs from 23 overs. It is the worst economy rate for any spinner to have bowled at least 120 balls in six successive matches in men's T20s. Sunday was also the first time that Varun went wicketless in 17 T20 games.
3 - Wickets for Shardul Thakur on his IPL debut for MI, taking one each in his first three overs. He was responsible for the first three wickets in KKR's innings.
Thakur ended those partnerships at 69, 40 and 36 respectively. There have been only three previous instances in the IPL where a bowler has broken three partnerships of 35-plus runs. One of those was Thakur himself, against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in 2022, while Andrew Tye (against KKR in 2018) and Chris Morris (against Rajasthan Royals (RR)) in 2020 are the others.
