4:02pm That will be all from us for this Test. We hope you enjoyed our coverage just as much as we loved bringing it to you. Until next time, from all of us here at ESPNcricinfo, it is goodbye. Take care, folks!
Tom Blundell, Player of the Match: It was an enjoyable innings, just spending a bit of time in the middle. Having that partnership with Rachin was pleasing. Just patience all around - not the easiest wicket, kept you honest, and about partnerships. Was a difficult wicket at times but managed to get through. He (McBrine) bowled really well, not much in the wicket. Was able to bring out the reverse sweep and get runs. Great for Foxy to debut and to come so close (to his hundred). He deserved it, but he will take a lot from this (experience). Weather has been great, played a bit of golf along the way. Great prep for what is to come.
Tom Latham, New Zealand captain: We were put under pressure at times, which is what you want, but the way the guys were able to come out, absorb pressure and then put it on them. Got the rewards (in the end), which was great. They (our pacers) did fantastically well, bowled well with the new ball. Smith setting the tone for us. When the ball got softer, that is when we were challenged. We were fantastic. Not played Test cricket for a while, so about finding the rhythm and tempo. It has been fantastic (coming out here). We wanted to come here and play our brand of cricket. To be put under pressure, to have time on our feet, it is really important and hopefully it sets us up for what lies ahead. The way Ireland bowled with the new ball, they bowled fantastically well. The new ball did offer the bowlers assistance. We speak about times when we are put under pressure and when we need to put pressure back on (to the opposition). To put on more than 200, it was a fantastic partnership (between Blundell and Ravindra). (Confidence going into the England series) We like coming over to this part of the world. Really special place to play. Have been here a lot, have a good opportunity to put our best foot forward, play our brand of cricket and if we do that, we know we will give ourselves a good chance.
Andrew Balbirnie. Ireland captain: They (NZ) are very good, did not expect them to be anything but that. Really tough for our guys to rock up and put in a good performance. We had a bit of a sniff on the first morning, but once they got throughâŠwe were always playing catch-up. (On his decision at the toss) I would not have changed it. Was not in two minds. The start was brilliant. We did not take our chance (at slip). If I go back, I would have done it again. Just a shame we could not capitalize on that start. (On the debutants) Just really proud for them. It is difficult. Rueben is 19 and played his first First-Class game a week ago. Difficult for them - nothing to go back to for them. But hopefully they will get experience (from this test). (On their biggest challenge in Test cricket) Just facing high-quality new ball bowling - something we are not used to much. Our middle order has shown (you can cash in). We will keep trying and hopefully down the line, we will get our rewards. If our top order started getting runs, we will get some big scores because our middle order has been really consistent. We have to be better (as a top order). I have always been a big advocate (for Test cricket). But we also need to have a setup under it, where we are not just finding out about players on the biggest stage. We want to keep playing and keep getting better. Really looking forward to watching that series (between England and NZ). Two really good countries, playing in good spirits. We can definitely learn a lot from these past few days and hopefully our Test cricket can keep moving forward.
3:37pm A fairly comfortable NZ win, and one that did not seem in doubt once Blundell and Ravindra had rescued them early on day one. The bowlers did their bit thereafter, bowling Ireland out for 179 in the first innings before skittling them out for 232, having asked the hosts to follow-on. Tickner was the star of the Kiwi bowling show in the second innings. Smith chipped in with a couple of wickets too, with Foulkes also getting himself on the board.
Ireland were never really in the contest post tea on day one, but will be richer for this experience. Their lower order held their own in both innings, with Doheny also compiling a gutsy half-century in the second. Plenty of learnings for them, and they will hope they can harness and implement all of them when they play red-ball cricket next.
