6.32pm: And with that it's stumps. Well, well! Test cricket, you crazy dame... Having had to toil 72 overs for their first wicket of the day, England managed to then take 4 for 44 across the next 12.1. It's probably worth saying that New Zealand remain well on top, having amassed 317 between the openers, with twin centuries from Tom Latham and Devon Conway. But Ben Stokes broke through after a fruitless morning and afternoon, in which they barely created a chance - and he'll have plenty to say in the changing room before the England bowlers go to their hotel for a well-earned rest tonight. Speaking of which, that's it from myself, Miller and Thilak. The report will be with you shortly, and then head over to Bristol for another vital fixture in the ongoing Women's T20 World Cup. Bye!

Here is Conway talking to Sky: "Great day for us, nice to put on a partnership. Happy with how things went. [Bat long after winning toss?] That was the play obviously. Knew the wicket would be quite nice, important to put pressure on the bowling. Nice to be out there for an extended time and build partnerships. Felt out of sorts at times, been struggling with my pre-movement this series. [Changes?] Was trying out keeping my back foot still, not having that pre-movement. Tried it for three balls, then went back to getting the movement in there. [Baby dash home] Long trip but really glad to get back and see the wife and little one. [Late wickets] Don't know about par, bit disappointing that we lost two at the end. Lot of batters in the sheds, so hopefully kick on and keep building partnerships."

Archer to Nicholls, OUT, Archer rips out another! Back of a length, draws a tame prod in the channel and the ball visibly deflects off the edge through to Smith! Decent delivery, but did Nicholls have to play at it? Anyhoo. What an extraordinary finish to a sweat-soaked day in the dirt for England, two in two turning 361 for 2 into 361 for 4

Will O'Rourke walks out at nightwatcher... Nicholls on strike, though, for what will be the final over today

Atkinson to Ravindra, OUT, skied and taken behind the stumps! Bashir's effort indirectly brings about a wicket! Atkinson strikes in the dying embers of the day, and England will walk off a little feeling a little cheerier. Wow! Root immediately pointed to Bashir and ran in his direction, followed by Stokes. Not a great shot from Ravindra, with stumps looming. England crowbar out a third

Christian: "Spare a thought for Messrs Tucker and Menon, who've done nothing but stand in the heat, counting 6 balls at a time and signalling boundaries all day." Dream day for an ump, no?

3
Atkinson to Nicholls, 3 runs, short ball, swatted away fine. Bashir is down there, stops it once and then gives chase again as the ball trickles towards the boundary cushion, putting in another full-length dive. Did he prevent four? The third umpire wants multiple looks at it... Yes! Well done, Bash

"Given there's clearly no problem with the light, they could just bowl the 90 then stop for the day." Haha, yes. Can I nominate you to run out there and suggest that to Stokes and co, Rick?
