Jets suffer another linebacker injury, as Calvin Pace (groin) leaves practice

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- What we learned on Monday, Day 26 of New York Jets training camp:

1. The outside-linebacker depth will be tested: The Jets suffered two injuries at the position in a 24-hour span. Starting strong-side linebacker Calvin Pace left practice with a strained groin; there was no immediate word on the severity. The 34-year-old Pace rarely misses practice time, so you have to believe this was more than just a tweak. On Sunday night, they lost rookie Lorenzo Mauldin for at least a week. The team is calling it a sprained knee, offering no details except to say he won't play this week against the New York Giants. Todd Bowles left open the possibility that Mauldin could play in the final preseason game. Mauldin, walking with a limp, emerged from the trainers' room during practice and watched from the sideline. It's always a good sign when an injured player can make it outside to watch practice. It leaves Quinton Coples and Trevor Reilly or Jason Babin as the starters.

2. You can't have too many tight ends (or can you?): The Jets signed another tight end because ... well, why not? They added Matt LaCosse, who was waived recently by the Giants. The 90-man roster includes seven tight ends. Drum roll, please: Jeff Cumberland, Kellen Davis, Jace Amaro, Steve Maneri, Wes Saxton, Arthur Lynch and LaCosse. We're not exactly talking about the seven blocks of granite here. In case you're wondering, Amaro (sprained shoulder) isn't close to returning, and it's fair to wonder if he will be ready by opening day. Bowles said it will be "a couple of weeks" before Amaro returns. Stay tuned; there will be more upheaval at the position.

3. Mo goes back-to-back: Defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson, coming off a three-week hamstring injury, practiced for the second straight day. This time, he was in his usual spot, taking reps with the starters. Barring a setback, he will play against the Giants. He "looked fast," according to Bowles. Obviously, Wilkerson isn't in top football shape, which means this is a critical week because the starters won't play in the final preseason game.

4. Waiting on Flynn: Recently-signed quarterback Matt Flynn won't play against the Giants. Right now, the best-case scenario is that he plays the preseason finale. Flynn still is recovering from a hamstring injury that occurred before training camp. Flynn is throwing in positional drills, but he hasn't participated in any team drills. Rookie Bryce Petty still is working with the second team. It'll be the Petty-Flynn show in the finale against the Philadelphia Eagles, assuming the hammy cooperates.

5. Fitz works OT: Quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick stayed after practice, throwing routes to Eric Decker. They had a couple of miscommunications during practice, so they spent time together on a near-empty field, fine-tuning four or five routes.

6. Football hurts: No fewer than 15 players missed practice on Monday. You know what they say about the NFL: It's a 100 percent injury rate.

7. Your daily receiver update: Jeremy Kerley (concussion) isn't close to returning. Neither is rookie Devin Smith (broken ribs), who probably won't be ready by opening day, according to Bowles. Quincy Enunwa continued to work as the No. 3 receiver, but don't rule out Chris Owusu just yet. Owusu, practicing in a red jersey as he works his way back from a concussion, made a couple of nice plays. On one play, he beat Darrelle Revis for a long reception ... badly. Revis gave up on the play, perhaps out of deference to the red, non-contact jersey.

8. Marshall Law? So, according to Brandon Marshall, the players have a pact: Anybody who discusses the Geno Smith-IK Enemkpali fight with the media has to run penalty gassers in practice. I wonder: Was the "covenant," as Marshall called it, created because of him? He made himself part of the story last week, defending Smith in national radio and TV interviews -- albeit a week after the incident. Say this for Marshall: He's having a terrific camp on the field. He made a sensational, one-handed grab, snatching the ball out of the air like a first baseman in baseball.

9. What a business: Defensive end Davon Wells, an undrafted rookie free agent, suffered a knee injury in Sunday night's scrimmage at Hofstra University. On Monday, he was waived with an injury settlement to make room for LaCosse.
