Jaguars 2014 position review: Running back

Each day for the next two weeks we’ll review how each position group performed in 2014 as well as taking an early look at 2015. Tuesday we’ll examine the running backs. On Wednesday we’ll do tight ends.

Running back

Breakdown of starts: Denard Robinson (9), Toby Gerhart (7), Storm Johnson (1), Jordan Todman (1), FB Will Ta'ufo'ou (4).

Recap: The Jaguars averaged 102.1 yards per game rushing, which was 21st in the NFL. As bad as that is, it was significantly better than 2013, when they finished 31st (78.8 yards per game). Robinson led the team with 582 yards and four touchdowns despite not playing the final three games because of a sprained foot. He did the bulk of that work in a four-week span, rushing for 389 yards and all four of his touchdowns from Weeks 7-10. Gerhart was a huge disappointment, gaining just 326 yards and averaging 3.2 yards per carry. He was completely healthy for only four games and battled a foot injury through the first 10 weeks and bruised ribs in the final two games. Johnson ran for 21 yards on 10 carries in his only start and struggled in pass protection. Robinson didn’t fare well with that, either, and his worst game in that area came against the New York Giants when he was overpowered for two sacks.

Looking ahead to 2015

Players under contract: Gerhart, Robinson, Johnson and FB Bradie Ewing.

The skinny: Despite his poor stats, the Jaguars were pleased with Gerhart in 2014 and are counting on him to be a big part of the run game in 2015. GM David Caldwell and coach Gus Bradley believe Gerhart will be an effective runner if he stays healthy for an entire season. Robinson complements Gerhart’s bruising style well, and the two of them should provide a good balance. Still, neither one is a feature back and it’s likely the Jaguars will add another back in free agency or the draft. Johnson could get more work if he improves his pass blocking. Ta’ufo’ou and Todman are restricted free agents.
