GREEN BAY, Wis. -- B.J. Raji’s unexpected hiatus from the NFL left the Green Bay Packers with another hole on their roster.
The good news is there’s plenty of quality defensive linemen available in this year’s NFL's draft.
The bad news is it creates another need for general manager Ted Thompson to fill along with tight end and inside linebacker.
So it should come as no surprise that in ESPN NFL draft analyst Todd McShay’s latest mock that he has the Packers taking a player who could help offset the loss of Raji. He likes Louisiana Tech defensive tackle Vernon Butler to the Packers at No. 27 overall in the first round.
At this point, the Packers plan to play Letroy Guion at nose tackle, where Raji played last season. They re-signed Guion last month to a three-year, $11.25 million contract even before they had an inkling that Raji would walk away. They also have third-year pro Mike Pennel, an improving interior run-stopping defensive lineman, but Pennel will miss the first four games because of a suspension.
McShay took his mock draft a step further this time, providing two rounds of picks. He has the Packers taking a tight end, Jerell Adams of South Carolina, at No. 57 overall. In McShay’s scenario, Adams would be the second tight end to come off the board. He has Arkansas’ Hunter Henry going first at No. 50 to the Atlanta Falcons.
However, that would still leave the Packers with a significant need at inside linebacker given coach Mike McCarthy's insistence that Clay Matthews return to his old outside linebacker spot this season.
In a previous version of his mock draft, McShay had the Packers taking Henry at No. 27. This is the fourth version of McShay’s mock. You can see how his picks, and colleague Mel Kiper Jr.’s picks, for the Packers have changed this offseason.
