Even though they're picking at No. 27 in the first round, the Green Bay Packers should have a chance to take the best tight end in the upcoming NFL draft.
At this point, ESPN NFL draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. sees only one tight end worthy of a first-round pick, and he has him going to the Packers.
Just like fellow draft analyst Todd McShay did two weeks ago, Kiper has the Packers taking Arkansas tight end Hunter Henry in the first round in his latest mock draft released Thursday.
That's a change from Kiper's first mock draft last month, when he had the Packers taking Penn State defensive tackle Austin Johnson. That was before the Packers re-signed defensive tackle Letroy Guion last week.
Kiper did not have Henry going in the first round of his first mock draft last month. Now, he does not have Johnson as a first-round selection. It's a sign of how fluid mock drafts can be, especially more than two months before the actual draft. Still, it's noteworthy that both McShay and Kiper agree -- at least at this point -- on the Packers' selection.
Packers coach Mike McCarthy clearly wants more from the tight end position. He mentioned that in his season wrap-up press conference and then one day later fired tight ends coach Jerry Fontenot.
The Packers have not drafted a tight end in the first round since Bubba Franks in 2000.
