Mackesy's career-high 4 goals lead Cannons past Redwoods

Coulter Mackesy scored a career-high four goals to lead the Boston Cannons to a 15-12 victory over the California Redwoods on Saturday at Torero Stadium in San Diego.

Mackesy finished with a game-high six points, tying his career best with four goals and two assists for the Cannons (2-4). Brian Kelly was a key contributor with three goals and two assists, while Marcus Holman added a hat trick with three goals. Jack Regnery chipped in with two goals and one assist, and goaltender Colin Kirst made 15 saves in the win.

For the Redwoods (3-2), Andrew McAdorey led the offense with three goals. Chris Kavanagh, Ryder Garnsey and Sam English each scored twice in the losing effort. California goaltender Dillon Ward recorded a game-high 18 saves.

The game was a tale of two halves. After a defensive first half that saw Boston take a 4-2 lead into the break, the offenses exploded in the final two quarters. The victory was a crucial one for a Cannons team that entered the contest looking to snap a losing streak and spoil the Redwoods' homecoming weekend. The contest was a physical affair that saw Boston goalie Colin Kirst serve a one-minute penalty in the second quarter for an illegal body check.
