Is it right that Amir Jangoo and Roston Chase set a new sixth-wicket record in Antigua last weekend? And was Jangoo the first to score a double-century in his second Test match? asked Jerome Jackson from Trinidad
Amir Jangoo and Roston Chase put on 401 for West Indies' sixth wicket against Sri Lanka in Antigua at the weekend. That did beat the Test record, the 399 of Ben Stokes (258) and Jonny Bairstow (150 not out) for England against South Africa in Cape Town in 2016.
In scoring 233, Jangoo became only the third batter to score a double-century in his second Test. Zaheer Abbas still leads the way, with 274 for Pakistan against England at Edgbaston in 1971, while England's David Lloyd made 214 not out against India in his second Test, also at Edgbaston in 1974.
How often have both openers in a Test innings made it to 150, as New Zealand's did last week? asked Bruce McKinlay from New Zealand
New Zealand's first innings at Trent Bridge, in which Tom Latham made 151 and Devon Conway 155, was the 19th occasion that both openers had reached 150 in the same Test innings. It was only the second such instance for New Zealand, after Glenn Turner (259) and Terry Jarvis (182) against West Indies in Georgetown in 1972.
There have been two occasions when both openers made double-centuries: for Australia against West Indies in Bridgetown in 1965 (Bill Lawry 210, Bob Simpson 201) and by South Africa vs Bangladesh in Chattogram in 2008 (Neil McKenzie 226, Graeme Smith 232).
Latham and Conway combined for Test cricket's 17th opening partnership of 300 or more: they had also produced the 16th, with 323 against West Indies in Mount Maunganui last December.
New Zealand's eventual total of 438 was the third-lowest in any Test to contain a 300 partnership. England's 407 against India at Edgbaston last July included a stand of 303 between Harry Brook and Jamie Smith, while West Indies' 431 against Australia in Kingston in 1999 featured a stand of 322 between Brian Lara and Jimmy Adams.
Will O'Rourke finally made it into double figures in his 24th Test innings. Has anyone taken more to do this? asked Clem Morrison from New Zealand
In his first 23 Test innings, the New Zealand fast bowler Will O'Rourke had a highest score of 5 not out - but in his 24th innings, against England at Trent Bridge, he reached 19 after coming in as nightwatcher.
Only five players have taken longer to reach double figures in Tests. Chris Martin of New Zealand finally got there in his 49th innings, and Ebadot Hossain of Bangladesh in his 27th. Another Bangladeshi, Manjurul Islam, made double figures for the first time in his 26th innings, while the New Zealander Bob Blair, who died on his 94th birthday last week, did it in his 25th, and then hammered 64 not out against England in his 26th. Pommie Mbangwa of Zimbabwe had 25 innings in his career, and finished with a highest score of 8, while South Africa's Cuan McCarthy had 24 innings but a highest score of just 5.
After Ireland upset India in a T20 international last week, have they now beaten all the other Test-playing nations in an international fixture? asked Roy O'Carroll from Ireland
Ireland's comfortable 34-run win in Belfast was their first victory over India in 12 attempts (three ODIs and nine T20Is).
Ireland's men have yet to beat Australia, New Zealand or Sri Lanka in international cricket. They have recorded three wins over England, most famously in the 2011 ODI World Cup in Bengaluru. They also chased down 329 to beat England in an ODI in Southampton in 2020, and won a T20I against them in Melbourne during the 2022 World Cup.
In a stunning weekend for Irish cricket, their women's team pulled off their first T20 World Cup win, beating West Indies in Bristol last Sunday. They had previously won an ODI against them in Amstelveen back in 2003, when they bowled West Indies out for 52. Ireland Women have still not beaten Australia, India and New Zealand in full internationals.
I just noticed that New Zealand's side in the first Test against England included five players who had kept wicket at some point in their career (Blundell, Conway, Latham, Nicholls and Philips). Was this a record? asked Prokash Ghosh from India
New Zealand's Henry Nicholls occasionally kept wicket in his younger days, but although he was named as the back-up wicketkeeper (to Luke Ronchi) for the 2016 T20 World Cup, he has never been the designated wicketkeeper in an international match. There have been seven men's international matches in which a team has included five players who had kept wicket or would do so in internationals, but Zimbabwe's XI in their Test against New Zealand in Napier in 2012 featured a record six: Tatenda Taibu (who kept in that game), Regis Chakabva, Tino Mawoyo, Forster Mutizwa, Brendan Taylor and Malcolm Waller.
