Stats - Sooryavanshi breaks Gayle's record for most sixes in an IPL season

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi brought up a 16-ball half-century BCCI

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is going where no one in the IPL has gone before. On Wednesday, we witnessed only the latest chapter in what he can do in the IPL 2026 Eliminator between Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Rajasthan Royals (RR). Here's the story in numbers.

65 - Sixes for Sooryavanshi in IPL 2026 - the most by any batter in a T20 tournament. He broke the record held by Chris Gayle, who had hit 59 sixes in IPL 2012. Gayle had taken 456 balls for his record. Sooryavanshi has taken 266.

16 - Balls that Sooryavanshi took to complete his fifty against SRH - the joint-fastest in IPL playoffs (or knockouts). Suresh Raina also had a 16-ball fifty for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) against Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) in Qualifier 2 in 2014.

242.85 - Sooryavanshi's strike rate this season, where he has scored 680 runs from 15 innings. He is the first batter with 600-plus runs in a T20 tournament while striking at 200 or more. Rilee Rossouw's 192.28 is the next best, from the time he scored 623 runs in the 2022 T20 Blast.

12 - Sixes by Sooryavanshi from just 29 balls in the Eliminator against SRH - the joint-highest by any Indian batter in an IPL innings. He equalled his own record, which he set against SRH in Jaipur earlier this season.

Sooryavanshi's 12 sixes are also the most by any batter in an IPL playoff (or knockout) game, going past the mark of Shubman Gill, who struck ten sixes against Mumbai Indians (MI) in Qualifier 2 in 2023.

Sooryavanshi's first ten sixes came in his first 24 balls, the fewest deliveries taken by any batter in the IPL to get to that mark. Gayle hit his first ten sixes in 27 balls against Pune Warriors during his 175* in 2013.

8 - Out of Sooryavanshi's 12 sixes on Wednesday, eight came in the powerplay, the most by a batter in this phase in an IPL innings. Five batters have hit seven sixes in an innings before, including Sooryavanshi against SRH earlier this season in Jaipur.

4 - Instances of Sooryavanshi hitting ten or more sixes in an IPL innings, the joint-highest alongside Gayle. Three of those four six-filled knocks have come in IPL 2026, the most for a batter in a single edition.

334.48 - Sooryavanshi's strike rate during his 29-ball 97, the highest for any batter in an IPL innings of 90 or more runs. The previous highest was 281.81 by Rajat Patidar, who scored 93* off 33 balls against Gujarat Titans (GT) on Tuesday in Qualifier 1.

3 - Instances of Sooryavanshi finishing with a 300-plus strike rate in an IPL innings where he has scored 50 or more runs, the most by any batter. In all T20 cricket, this is the fourth time he had done that, equalling the mark of Kieron Pollard.

5 - Instances of Sooryavanshi completing his fifty in the powerplay in an IPL game, putting him just behind David Warner, who has done it six times. Four of these fifties came in IPL 2026, equalling Travis Head's four in 2024.

490 - Runs that Sooryavanshi has scored in the first six overs, the most by any batter in this phase in an IPL season. He went past Warner's tally of 467 runs in the 2016 season.
