Aaron Finch says Tilak Varma is best suited to the middle order (1:57)

Aaron Finch, Faf du Plessis and Abhinav Mukund on the MI batter's century against GT (1:57)

It was a one-man show in the Mumbai Indians (MI) vs Gujarat Titans (GT) game in IPL 2026 on Monday night. Here are the numbers, and not just Tilak Varma's.

0-4 - MI's win-loss record against GT in Ahmedabad before their 99-run win on Monday. All four defeats had come while chasing.

Overall, MI have won only two of their eight IPL outings in Ahmedabad, the first of which came in 2014 against Rajasthan Royals (RR).

99 - GT's losing margin on Monday was their biggest in terms of runs in the IPL. Their previous biggest defeat was by 83 runs against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in 2025.

GT also registered their second-lowest total in the IPL, behind the 89 all out against Delhi Capitals (DC) in 2024.

45 - Balls Tilak took to bring up his hundred, the joint-fastest for MI in the IPL, equalling Sanath Jayasuriya's 45-ball century against CSK way back in 2008.

251 - Difference between Tilak's strike rate in his first 20 balls and the remainder of his innings, the highest for any batter in an IPL innings. Tilak scored 17 off his first 20 balls and 84 in his last 25.

The previous biggest difference was 212.62 for Will Jacks, also against GT in 2024 during his 41-ball century, where he scored 27 off his first 20 and 73 off his last 21.

82 - Runs that Tilak scored in the last six overs of MI's innings are the most by any batter in that segment of an IPL innings. The previous highest was 80 by Quinton de Kock against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in 2022, when he finished unbeaten on 140.

Tilak scored 64 in the last four overs, the second-highest in an IPL innings behind Tim David's 68 against CSK earlier this season.

22 - Number of balls Tilak faced before hitting his first boundary in the 15th over of the innings. He had scored only 19 runs till that point, but his last 23 balls yielded 82 with 15 boundaries.

Only one man had scored a T20 hundred before Tilak without hitting a boundary in their first 20 balls - Colin Munro against Adelaide Strikers in 2021 (where ball-by-ball data is available). Munro finished unbeaten on 114 off 73 despite scoring only 21 off his first 32 balls without a boundary.

4 - Number of batters to score a hundred while batting at No. 5 or lower in the IPL, including Tilak, who batted at No. 5 on Monday. Yusuf Pathan in 2010, David Miller in 2013 and Ben Stokes in 2017 are the others.

146 - Legitimate deliveries without a wicket for Jasprit Bumrah in the IPL before he dismissed B Sai Sudharsan with his first ball. His previous wicket in the IPL was that of Washington Sundar in last year's Eliminator. Bumrah had delivered 19 wicketless overs in IPL 2026 before Monday.

1 - Tilak became the first MI batter to outscore the opposition in the IPL. Overall, he is the eighth batter to outscore an opponent in an IPL match and the first since KL Rahul, who scored 134* for Punjab Kings (PBKS) in 2020 when Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) made 109 in reply.

1 - Bumrah took a wicket off the first ball of an innings for the first time in his 276-match T20 career. Bumrah had previously taken the new ball on only 15 occasions in his T20 career, and only six times in the IPL. Sai Sudharsan also bagged his first duck in 46 innings in the IPL, and also his first in 71 T20 innings.

60 - Matches that Tilak took for his first Player-of-the-Match award in the IPL. Only five players have endured a longer wait for their maiden match award in the IPL. Among batters, only Parthiv Patel (63) had waited longer.

Tilak's unbeaten 101 on Monday was his maiden IPL ton. Seven of his previous eight 50-plus scores in the league had come in defeats.
