Toss England chose to bowl vs New Zealand

England have won the toss and opted to bowl in the first ODI of their three-match series against New Zealand in Durham.

The home side will field three debutants in Dani Gibson, who has made 22 appearances in T20Is for England but is playing her first ODI, alongside left-arm spinner Tilly Corteen-Coleman and allrounder Jodi Grewcock, who have received their maiden international caps.

It will be Gibson's first outing for England since October 2024 after a back stress fracture kept her out of action last year and begins an exciting 2026 for the highest-paid domestic player in this year's Women's Hundred auction.

For Corteen-Coleman, it is a chance to further press her claims to play a role in the home T20 World Cup after she was called into the squad for that tournament, starting on June 12. For this match, she has received the nod ahead of fellow left-arm spinners Sophie Ecclestone and Linsey Smith in a bowling attack which also includes offspinner and acting captain Chalie Dean and seamers Lauren Bell and Lauren Filer.

This is England's first match after a 193-day gap - since last year's 50-over World Cup final, which they lost to eventual runners-up South Africa.

New Zealand, meanwhile, started the year with series victories against Zimbabwe and South Africa in both white-ball formats, their first under Melie Kerr's captaincy.

Play was set to begin under sunny skies, with patches of cloud cover but no rain and a high of 12 degrees Celsius.
