Innings break - New Zealand 391 (Phillips 100) and 362 (Nicholls 121, Ravindra 76, Mitchell 68) lead England 291 (Henry 5-80) by 462 runs
New Zealand lost their last four wickets in 6.1 overs after lunch to set England 463 to win the second Test at The Oval. Daryl Mitchell lost his off stump attempting to scoop Matthew Fisher before Kyle Jamieson, Nathan Smith and Matt Henry were out chasing quick tail-end runs against the second new ball.
In all, New Zealand added 110 runs to their overnight score for the loss of seven wickets and left themselves almost five sessions to bowl England out, a result which would set up a series decider at Trent Bridge next week. England would have to pull off a world-record run chase to secure the series with a game to spare.
Jofra Archer's two-wicket burst was the highlight of the second morning, and he would have had a wicket with his first ball of the day if Harry Brook had held onto a diving catch at slip off Mitchell. He struck an over later when Brook, moved to second slip moments earlier, held onto a simpler chance off centurion Henry Nicholls, who added two runs to his overnight 119.
Joe Root nearly gave Tom Blundell a reprieve when he juggled a chance at leg slip, only for wicketkeeper James Rew to scoop up the rebound and break a 29-run stand for the fifth wicket. That was enough for Blundell and Mitchell to pass 1,000 partnership runs in Tests against England, the first New Zealand pair to reach that landmark.
Archer bowled eight of the first nine overs from the Pavilion End, with spells of five and three overs punctuated by a single set from Sonny Baker. He bowled with good pace and repeatedly tested New Zealand's batters, and was again rewarded when first-innings centurion Glenn Phillips was well held by Jacob Bethell in the gully.
Nathan Smith joined Mitchell and tucked into Bethell's left-arm spin before lunch, hoisting consecutive balls over wide long-on and through deep midwicket for six then four. He tucked in again when England curiously declined to take the second new ball for the 81st over, hauling Fisher through long leg.
Mitchell had reached 50 with the first of three boundaries in a Root over before lunch, but fell soon after on the scoop. England then belatedly took the new ball and ran through the tail, with Fisher removing Jamieson (bowled) and Smith (caught slogging) before Baker had Henry slicing to extra cover.
