Mushfiqur key as Bangladesh aim for 400-plus after Abbas takes four

Mushfiqur Rahim and Litton Das kept Bangladesh on track on the second morning BCB

Bangladesh 380 for 7 (Shanto 101, Mominul 91, Mushfiqur 71*, Abbas 4-73) vs Pakistan

If Pakistan harboured hopes of running through Bangladesh early on with the new ball on the second morning, as Mohammad Abbas said post-match on Friday, Mushfiqur Rahim ensured they would be dashed. A stubborn morning session from the oldest player on the pitch either side kept Pakistan out in the hot, humid conditions with relatively little success to enjoy as the hosts put up their highest first-innings Test total against Pakistan.

Bangladesh added 79 runs in the morning to finish the session on 380 for 7, while Abbas was the only man to enjoy any success, removing Litton Das, Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Taijul Islam.

On day one, Bangladesh had began with a pair of boundaries off Shaheen Afridi. On day two, they went one better, with Litton punishing Shaheen by sending his first three balls to the boundary, as if to rubberstamp the hosts' dominance. Aside from that, though, Bangladesh were conservative, ensuring they saw off the threat of the second new ball early, and avoided a repeat of the early wickets that put them under pressure on day one.

Litton and Mushfiqur were content to play for time and patiently add to their overnight tally. Soon enough, they brought up the 50 partnership - again, with a boundary off Shaheen from Litton - as theirs was the third consecutive stand to get to the mark.

But in Abbas, Pakistan have someone who tends not to be put off by uncooperative surfaces or aging balls. Always searching for unconventional ways to gain an edge, he surprised Litton with a bouncer that, despite his modest pace, grew big as Litton tried to mow it over mid-on. He found Amad Butt, the substitute fielder, stationed there, who took a splendid catch for Pakistan's first success in the morning.

Shortly after, Abbas added a second wicket in the morning as Mehidy tried to transfer pressure back onto him. A six off the previous delivery emboldened the batter to scythe him through point, but he only found Imam-ul-Haq's safe hands.

It appeared Bangladesh had decided to take Pakistan on from one end while Mushfiqur shepherded them from the other. Taijul Islam went after Hasan Ali in a little cameo that sped up the scoring rate, but, again, found himself succumbing to the unlikely Abbas bumper that he failed to get over.

It gave Mohammad Rizwan an easy catch, and Abbas a fourth wicket. But with Mushfiqur still at the crease, Bangladesh might feel their patient quest to bat Pakistan out of the game is coming along nicely.
