Jackson's homer in 10th lifts Georgia past Mississippi State
Daniel Jackson hit a go-ahead two-run home run in the top of the 10th inning as Georgia outlasted Mississippi State for a wild 11-9 victory Sunday to clinch the Athens Super Regional and advance to the Men's College World Series.
In a slugfest that featured 10 total home runs, Georgia rallied from a late deficit to punch its ticket to Omaha. The Men's College World Series begins Friday.
Kolby Branch was a force for the Bulldogs, going 3-for-4 with two home runs and two RBIs. Brennan Hudson also had a huge day, finishing 3-for-5 with a home run and two RBIs, including a game-tying single in the top of the ninth that forced extra innings. Jackson went 2-for-5 and Michael O'Shaughnessy also contributed, going 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Georgia reliever Justin Byrd pitched two scoreless innings to close out the game, walking two and striking out two. Bulldogs starter Caden Aoki struck out nine batters over 5⅔ innings while allowing four runs on eight hits.
Mississippi State erased a 7-2 deficit with a stunning power display. The comeback charge was highlighted by a seventh inning that saw Ace Reese, Noah Sullivan and Jacob Parker hit back-to-back-to-back home runs to cut Georgia's lead to 8-7. Parker then gave Mississippi State a 9-8 lead in the bottom of the eighth with a two-run homer, his second of the game.
Parker finished 2-for-6 with three RBIs, while Reese went 3-for-6 with an RBI, Sullivan went 2-for-5 and Vytas Valincius and Kevin Milewski each hit homers for Mississippi State in the loss.
